KENYATAAN MEDIA: ISU PELANCARAN HIJAB

Article, press release

Today Malaysians were left stunned by the news of the recent launch of headscarves collection by a famous and much respected local celebrity. The cause of upset and distress was in the way the ceremony was inappropriately organized and the lack of careful consideration in regards to how the products were launched; which were the collection of hijab.

The society is aware that the hijab is used by Muslims to protect their “awrah” (in this case, the hair) as part of following the Sharia teachings of Islam. However, protecting the awrah is not just about covering a woman’s hair, it is also about protecting the modesty of a Muslim woman and guarding herself from any disgrace and harm that can befall upon her.

Allah S.W.T stated in Surah Al-Ahzab (33) : 59 – “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.”

Through this verse, it is clear that every woman is instructed by Allah SWT to cover her awrah perfectly to guard herself and preserve her modesty.

It is true that the hijab is a fashion statement, but one should never forget that the hijab is first and foremost a ‘sharia statement’, a public declaration that one is a Muslim woman, an affirmation of her Sharia obligation towards Allah SWT as her Creator and not merely a “trend to follow”. It is most definitely something that should never be taken lightly nor manipulated as a marketing strategy for the mere purpose of reaping financial profit.

Therefore, MIZAN urges and recommends that hijab entrepreneurs and wearers to increase their knowledge and to practice more careful consideration pertaining to understanding the wisdom behind the command of wearing hijab because every choice and action that we take in this world will be accounted for in the akhirah.

In accepting the call to ‘enjoin good and repel evil’ (amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar), we also earnestly plead to the public to stop any acts of condemning or unconstructive criticizing towards people who err or slip from their mistakes. Instead of hatefully and publicly humiliating those who make mistakes, we should call upon them with kindness and considerate advice.  ‘Hate the sin, not the sinner’.

It is hoped that Malaysia will produce more entrepreneurs who are intelligent, responsible and thoughtful towards the religion and social sensitivity of our society.

Love always,
